In my last post, I mentioned that I’m “retiring” from tutoring … and finishing up my A Summerland Stories Scrapbook: Memories & Memorabilia book activities … and moving on to other “retirement” activities that I’ve been putting off for a long time.
One of those activities is reading books. Of course, in the past year or so, I’ve read a tremendous amount of articles, short stories, social media posts and comments, magazines, blogs, news posts, and on and on and on. But I was thinking that I haven’t been reading whole books much at all. I also mentioned in a previous post that I jot down my daily activities in my agenda book, and then transfer “important” activities, especially those related to reading and writing and editing, to another notebook once a week.
So today I was flipping through the latter notebook today, and realized that I’ve actually read quite a few BOOKS this year (2025). I was also interested to realize that they reflect quite a variety of personal interests and activities. So I thought I’d just dot down my 2025 (so far) book reading … and give you an opportunity to share what you’ve been reading, too! So here goes:
Inspire: The Bible for Creative Journaling (New Living Translation: Tyndale) [I used to read through the Bible every year, but haven’t for a while … but I’m well along doing it again this year]
The Divine Hours by Phyllis Tickle [book of prayers – 3 volumes]
Cantelon’s Casual Commentary – James Cantelon
The Nonfiction Book Publishing Plan – Karl Patchuk and Stephanie Chandler
Who We Are: Four Questions for Life and a Nation – Hon. Murray Sinclair
A More Christlike Way – Bradley Jersak
How to Write Nonfiction: Turn Your Knowledge Into Words – Joanna Penn
Elements of Indigenous Style – 2nd Ed – Greg Younging; ed. Warren Cariou
The Singing Shepherd – Rich Parlee
Inside Outside – Faye Arcand
Rules of Estrangement: Why Adult Children Cut Ties and How to Heal the Conflict – Joshua Coleman
The Business of Being a Writer (2nd Ed.) – Jane Friedman
The Golden Spruce – John Vaillant
Sacred Economics: The Currency of Life – Eileen Worknes
So You Girls Remember That: Memories of a Haida Elder – Gaadgas Nora Bellis
Complete Guide to Needlework – Readers Digest
The Chosen of the Land – Robert K. Thomas & Terence R. Andersen
Writers Making Money – (course) Jane Friedman
And now? I’m digging into Developmental Editing: A Handbook for Freelancers, Authors, and Publishers … and I also went into my Kindle account and discovered 23 books I have ordered over the past few years and never quite got to reading! LOL! So I guess they’ll be on my list soon 🙂
What about you? What have you been reading lately? Why not tell us in the comments (see top left corner of this page).
Oh! And if you’re not sure where to start on a new-to-you book, you can always check out my A Summerland Stories Scrapbook: Memories and Memorabilia 1930s-1960s 🙂

I offer here a tripos of three novels, all climate-crisis related:
What we can know: A Novel, Ian McEwan
Wild Dark Shore: A Novel, Charlotte McConaghy
The Ministry for the Future, Kim Stanley Robinson
There’s more, but enough for now. Ken

I read various articles/chapters etc from various sources throughout the day, depending on the project/WIP/item-of-interest, but focussed book-reading usually happens just before bed, for as long as I can keep my eyes open. I too keep a list which I find useful, but it feels positively frivolous compared to yours! However, here’s a few from the list: Ghost Writers in the Sky (Allen), Live Your Best Life (Renner), Gone Viking (Arnott), Lady Chatterly’s Lover (Lawrence), Dastardly Deeds at St. Bride’s (Young), Orwell’s Roses (Solnit).
